FAQs

What can a Forms Specialist do?
  • A Forms Specialist is allowed to help translate documents, enter data into forms, help secure supporting documentation, apply for background checks, assemble and submit completed application packages, assist with navigation of the USCIS website, and provide referrals to other services or professionals.
  • A Forms Specialist cannot advise how to answer questions, give opinions, select forms for the customer, offer legal advice, discuss legal strategy, and appear in court on the customer’s behalf.
What are some best practices for meetings?
  • Know what form you need to submit and get comfortable with the format of the form.
  • Have your supporting documents ready:
    1. Eligibility of Petitioner docs – birth certificate, U.S. Passport, naturalization certificate, permanent resident card (green card)
    2. If “marriage based” – marriage certificate, joint ownership of property, affidavit of support, joint bank account
    3. If “non-marriage based” – birth certificate, DNA Test, hospital records, school records, affidavit of support
  • If a petitioner or beneficiary has ever filed a form with USCIS before, they should have their USCIS account number ready.
  •  Always be honest. Misreporting criminal history or attempting to deceive USCIS with fraudulent information is a fast path to having your application denied.
  • Never send originals of supporting documents. Always make copies and keep your originals.
When a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) files to become a Naturalized U.S. Citizen, what documents are required at the citizenship interview?
  • Current Green Card, current state issued ID, current passport and all expired passports, all travel documents issued by USCIS, the appointment notice from USCIS, any additional documents requested by USCIS, and all originals of submitted documents.
Which Departments can initiate removal proceedings?
  • U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS)
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)
  • U.S. Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR)
